Philly Fed manufacturing index shows March rebound

The numbers: The Philadelphia Fed business activity index rebounded in March to a seasonally adjusted reading of 13.7 from – 4.1 in the prior month.

What happened: The survey’s component on new orders increased to 1.9 in March from -2.4 in the prior month, which was the lowest figure since May 2016. Shipping in the region also rebounded into positive territory to 20 from -5.3 in February. The survey’s employment barometer slipped to 9.6 in March from 14.5 in the prior month.Big picture: The March Empire State index fell to 3.7 in March from 8.8 in February.
