Traditionally, computers and software were add-ons for cars and trucks. An executive with semiconductor company Nvidia on Wednesday said vehicles need to be built around computing.

Now, with a shift to electric vehicles and self-driving cars and trucks, there is more demand for increased computing power. All of this is happening amid changes in manufacturing generally. Digital twins, essentially computer simulations, permit companies to plan and deploy manufacturing machinery. Collaborative robots, also known as cobots, work in close proximity with human operators.

“We believe there’s a need for technology,” he said. “We’re going to see some advancement. We want to make sure it’s safe.”Such vehicles must be safe amid unpredictable human behavior, Shapiro said. “As long as we have people behaving badly, it’s going to be a problem.”
