The Retail and Fast Food Workers Union says a Greens-led plan to break up firms abusing market power should be made law.

Already a subscriber?The rebel shop assistants union has split with the rest of the labour movement to call for the forced break-up of supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths over disputed claims of price gouging.

RFFWU secretary Josh Cullinan backed Greens-led plans to create a regime that would force the break-up of companies found to abuse their market power, saying it was badly needed. The SDA is a major donor to the Labor Party. Its size and membership among workers in the industry make it a powerful presence in enterprise negotiations.

The results were in line with the after-tax supermarket profit margins of 2 per cent to 3 per cent in Britain, the US and Canada.Former competition chief Allan Fels recommended divestiture powers in a review of price gouging and unfair practices commissioned by the ACTU. Ms McManus this week rejected that recommendation and called instead for a permanent prices commission.
