The market dates back to the 1800s and was shut by the the council earlier this month

The future of market trading in Liverpool city centre has faced increased scrutiny after the sudden and controversial closure of St Johns Market.

Much has been made of the city’s long association of market trading, with some even referring to St Johns as “the public’s market” but with no long term decision yet to be made on whether the famous city centre site could reopen, questions will be asked about the viability of a city centre market in the long-term.

Cllr Liam Robinson, leader of Liverpool Council, said the city was left with “literally no option” but to close St Johns Market amid the ongoing row. The Labour group leader said it was “sad the way it’s panned out” but council payers expected the city to collect revenue it was owed. His group hopes to use an extraordinary meeting, regarding the closure, to secure support for a new location to be set up to continue the city’s long tradition of a central market. In its motion to be considered by all members, the Liberal Democrats said it should adopt the stance that Liverpool should have a market in the centre of the city, “which residents want to go to.”
