The creators of Capitol City Crunch, which honors the city in more than name, were searching for joy after loss when they entered the cereal business

In a region where people are often asked for their work titles, Brandi Forte and Noel Warner had to get creative. She laughs as she says it, but really, there is no better way to describe the work the two have been doing and what they hope comes of it.

“I’m the back of the box girl,” Forte says, explaining that while Warner worked on what the cereal should look and taste like, she decided how it should be packaged., along with a word search puzzle that contains the names of local colleges and universities, including American, Georgetown and Howard.I will love myself. I will activate my dreams. My story is important. My life is full of purpose and promise.

But you don’t have to like cereal to appreciate what Warner and Forte have created and why they have thrown themselves into a business that is dominated by big-name companies. The two were searching for joy after loss when they entered the cereal business. The two met more than 17 years ago while working for a D.C. organization that aims to reduce violence. Both are African American and in recent years both lost spouses to issues that have disproportionately affected the Black community in D.C.

At the mall, their business sits near a Target and a Five Below. Behind the counter, walls are lined with shelves that hold all sorts of cereal boxes. They don’t just have Cinnamon Toast Crunch; they have Apple Pie Toast Crunch, Dulce de Leche Toast Crunch and Chocolate Toast Crunch. They have at least six types of Lucky Charms and 10 types of Cheerios. They have Franken Berry and Carmella Creeper. On the day I go, an empty box of Capitol City Crunch sits near the register.

“Every time I come here, I have so much fun,” Warner says, looking around the cereal bar. “Not only are we making kids happy, we’re making adults happy.”
