Social media executives could be jailed and their companies fined billions of dollars if they fail to remove terrorist material like the Christchurch massacre live stream under proposed new laws.

Companies like Facebook and Google, which owns YouTube, would be forced to take down videos"expeditiously".

Attorney-General Christian Porter said juries would determine whether material was not removed quickly enough in each case. While the legislation would not apply retrospectively, Mr Porter said he expected a jury would find Facebook guilty over the Christchurch video."That is a totally unreasonable period of time and represents a complete failure of Facebook's own systems," he said.

Executives based in Australia and overseas could face up to three years' imprisonment if found guilty, and companies could be fined up to 10 per cent of annual turnover."They'll invest more seriously in the type of technology and human resources that are required to identify this material, prevent it from being live streamed ... and take it down quickly if it does slip through that initial net.

Google's parent company enjoyed revenue of $US136.8 billion during 2018, meaning technology companies could be liable for billions of dollars if successfully prosecuted.

Threats to Social media executive is laughable. Based in USA. Try to negotiate would be more productive. Stop violence on our main stream media and in particular from members of Parliament

Violent footage gets on main stream media. Cannot blame social media. Our television is loaded with violence .

Manage it in the Parliament first Members of Parliament Racists hate rhetoric speeches that can energize incite violence a criminal offence

Unrealistic unacceptable to solve the problem Members of Parliament Racists hate rhetoric speeches that can energize incite violence a criminal offence needs attention. That can actual be auctioned in Australia

Australian media ultimately attacking Australian freedom of press by supporting the regulation of freedom of public speech is absolutely hilarious. Here you go Murdoch, here's your silver platter with ABC paid for caviar on it. But wait....too late.

No Australian law can compel an overseas company to do anything with the data on its overseas servers, without a treaty, nor can it compel them to not serve data to computers in Australia. They only have power over local ISPs and could block all of FB until the video was removed.

How about the same thing for newspapers and TV.

Like realDonaldTrump ? Our Democracy can be saved if we Silence his Nazi posts on social media!

The bill attacks these social media companies for what they were trying their best to stop but does nothing to stop the hate speech or pages belonging to White Supremacists or Nazi organisations. This is another case where the PM might as well have done nothing. auspol

There must be balance. New laws shall be passed but let's not go all china hey?
