Geelong great Joel Selwood fears Jeremy Finlayson’s homophobic slur towards an Essendon player has delayed the day the AFL sees its first male player to come out as gay. Finlayson has been suspended for three matches after calling an Essendon player a f***** during their Gather Round clash at the Adelaide oval on Friday night.
Joel Selwood shares fears of consequences from Jeremy Finlayson’s homophobic slur. The Port Adelaide forward self-reported his slur and was immediately remorseful, but the damage had already been done, and Selwood thinks it might deter any gay AFL players from coming out. To date, no male AFL player has ever come out as gay. Selwood and Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin both agree that club environments are safe enough for players to come out, but the wider AFL community now may not be.
