WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT A man who killed six people in a Sydney shopping centre had a record of mental health issues in Queensland. However, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi - who was shot dead during his violent rampage at the Bondi Junction Westfield shopping centre - did not have a criminal history in his home state. “He is a person who has been identified as being known to the Queensland Police Service,” Assistant Commissioner Roger Lowe said in Brisbane on Sunday.

Asked whether police should have monitored Cauchi more closely and then let NSW police know about his move to Sydney this year, Lowe indicated he did not appear to be a significant imminent threat to the community. “We have people in our society who suffer from mental health,” the assistant commissioner said. “They go about their days without trouble, without causing these types of crimes.
