While more details come to light about a mass stabbing spree at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney, a criminologist has said police still have “an awful lot to do” as they try to piece together exactly how the tragedy unfolded. Five women and one man were murdered in the stabbing on Saturday afternoon at Bondi Junction Westfield, with another dozen people injured — including a baby girl whose mother died in the attack.

Latest on Bondi Junction stabbing. The killer, 40-year-old Queensland man Joel Cauchi, was shot dead by police at the scene, targeting women NSW Premier Chris Minns said, in the country’s worst massacre in recent years. Six people including the baby girl remain in Sydney hospitals. Dr Xanthe Mallett, criminologist and associate professor at the University of Newcastle, said she believes the killer picked the shopping centre to carry out the horrific attacks because it is “such a public place”.
