Testing is underway for potential contamination of aquacultural products — mostly prawns — from millions of litres of sewage found to be leaking into a Queensland river, in what’s been described as “a major environmental incident”. There are also concerns for people who may have fished in the Albert River on the northern Gold Coast, as well as connected waterways, amid fears the leak has been occurring since January.

It was estimated that four megalitres of sewage per day had been leaking into the river. The council later revealed the contamination is likely to have been occurring since mid-January — more than 80 days, meaning an approximate total of 350 million litres of sewage has leaked into the river. That’s about 140 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of sewage. “This has turned into a major environmental incident,” Hammel said. “This is a major sewage spill.
