Robert Irwin has received a new honour this week, with Queensland scientists naming a newly discovered species of snail named after him. Scientists used DNA testing to discover four species of snail, with one of them named for the celebrity wildlife conservationist. The banded snail has been given the scientific name figuladra robertirwini. The scientists’ findings have been published in the journal Molluscan Research.
The honour comes just two months after Robert and girlfriend Rorie ended their relationship in February, after a two-year romance. Irwin and Buckey shared the news on their respective Instagram accounts in February, with a joint statement saying the pair had decided to go their “separate ways”. “We wanted to share that we have decided to go our separate ways but profoundly appreciate all of the time spent together and wish one another all the very best into the future,” the pair said.
