A $650 million solar thermal power plant planned for Port Augusta will not go ahead after the company behind it failed to secure commercial finance for the project.

Mr van Holst Pellekaan said the Government had done"everything it possibly can to support this project", including extending deadlines, agreeing to changes to the project to add photovoltaic"We have remained ready willing and able as a new State Government for the last 12 months to deliver on our side of the bargain," he said.

Former South Australian premier Jay Weatherill announced the 150-megawatt solar thermal power plant had been secured for Port Augusta in August 2017, as part of his government's push into renewables following the 2016 statewideand would supply 100 per cent of the State Government's needs for 20 years.

Repower Port Augusta campaigner Daniel Spencer said the announcement was"incredibly disappointing news for the local community and all South Australians who campaigned to see solar thermal get up in Port Augusta".

"This is a project that's too big to fail — it's too big to fail for the people of Port Augusta who were relying on it to provide jobs into the future and it's something that the State and Federal Government promised to the community and there'll be a huge backlash if they don't deliver it."

The project will get funding as soon as this LNP Federal government is sent packing.

Build nuclear plants already! 100% the future!

Good thst was a white elephant

But the State Govt is happy to make an expensive loan for a bloody hotel at Football Pk.

There's plenty if cheap, powerful and job creating coal in the ground so let's use it.

Windy here today They turned off the turbines Blackouts at Norwood and Rosewater

🇦🇺-☢️

because it was a scam project

Winning

It’s time to go nuclear

You know the people who are sinking billions into fusion research, they have a fair idea of how fast that is progressing. This is relevant to the ROI timing for any new projects, therefore their viability. So in the meantime don't shut down old plants, get your money out of them!

Good news, Everybody! 2 dumb ideas axed in one day! Big savings for taxpayers! If you believe in the climate scam, you can spend your money, not everyone elses hard earned.

Great news

But they will think about ANOTHER coal energy plant FFS

Booo

Would be interesting to know what going on here. 'new' is still too risky here, thermal is meant to be a bit cheap than PV? Too big, in a time where things are moving to small and distributed? Isn't the 'first commercial' project what ARENA is for? My, we have drawn the troll

What they are saying is that they don't believe households will forgo the advantages of residential solar to once again be at the mercy of an electricity supplier. It matters not one jot if the electricity is provided by gas, coal, nuclear or solar, they will screw you.

I thought solar was the future

Wait for the greens to start suggesting that something so badly costed that is cant make a buck with all the rigged rules around power generation ought to be paid for by the ever-suffering taxpayer.
