The family of a woman found dead inside her Cobram home on Tuesday have described her as a kind, family-orientated person who had battled health issues for the majority of her life. Emma Bates was found dead inside her home on Campbell Rd about 2.15pm. That same day, her partner, John Torney, was arrested, with CCTV footage showing two police officers tackling him to the ground as he walked his bike down Cobram’s main street. He was later charged with a series of assault offences.

She was a “proud” aunt to 17 nieces and nephews, who were her “pride and joy”. “She would spend hours talking about them to everyone. She had many of their faces tattooed to her leg so she could carry them with her always,” her family said. They said it was “tragic” that Bates’ kindness had “led her to a friendship with a man who wished her harm”. “No one deserves that.
