‘Rather than tackling gender inequality head on, boards are simply repackaging it.'

Campaigners have accused companies of trying to cover up their gender pay gaps by paying men more in bonuses.

The Women’s Equality Party analysed the 10,429 companies which took part and found almost a third – 32 per cent – had smaller pay gaps than last year but bigger bonus gaps.New data also found 45 per cent of companies had overall bigger gender pay gaps in 2018 compared to 2017, according to a BBC study.

Harini Iyengar, spokesperson for the Women’s Equality Party, said a tax on excessive bonuses should be implemented if companies are going to find loopholes in the system. The activist added: ‘Rather than tackling gender inequality head on, boards are simply repackaging it.‘They take profit away from the lowest paid workers, most of whom are women, and they encourage the kinds of risk-taking that resulted in the financial crisis that women have paid for through years of austerity.

This is the second round of pay gap reports, with companies boasting more than 250 employees required to submit annual figures.
