Wawa President Brian Schaller said while the Delaware County chain has focused for several years on growing its core Philadelphia market, it has always eyed neighboring communities such as Harrisburg.Capitol in Harrisburg for “Wawa Day in Central Pa.” The company said it uses the celebrations as a way to acquaint communities with the brand. Wawa plans to open between five and seven stores a year over the next five years, including in Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lycoming, Northumberland, Union and York counties.
While he said many make light of the Sheetz vs. Wawa rivalry, the competition is nothing new. The two rivals, he said, operate in other markets such as Virginia.
