A teenager from New Zealand has been killed in a workplace incident in Western Australia, prompting the state’s peak union body to lash what it says are “unsafe practices”. The 17-year-old boy was reportedly involved in an incident on a sheep and wheat farm in Burakin, northeast of Perth just before 10.15am on Saturday.
“Any death is too many, it sounds a cliché, it’s a trite thing to say, but it is actually true. “To have a 17-year-old New Zealand worker come out and work on a farm and not go home is an absolute tragedy, it’s terrible, and shows the sort of work we have to do.” Owen Whittle from Unions WA said there had been four work-related deaths in WA in a matter of weeks. “What is familiar with all of these are they all involve young men, all involving plant and unsafe workplaces.
