A man charged with murder after his elderly mother’s body was found at their home in Perth’s south has faced court for the first time. Andre Lafayette Drane, 54, appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with murdering his mother, 78-year-old Joan Drane. In court, the 54-year-old appeared to have an injured hand and leg and only spoke to confirm his name. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on May 29.
Floral tributes have been laid outside the home as the community grapples with what one neighbour said was a “shock to the system”. “Devastated, I couldn’t believe it ... I’m still in shock,” she said, with another neighbour adding that he had only seen her two days ago. It’s understood neighbours had contacted police after noticing blood outside her house on Monday morning. WA Premier Roger Cook said it was a complex and traumatic situation.
