Ex-minister Ukur Yatani and former Governor Mwangi wa Iria are the latest prominent leaders to be arrested over corruption allegations. However, analysts say Kenyans should not expect much from corruption cases involving politicians due to political interests.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating Ukur Yatani, who served as a Finance minister in the government of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, over alleged corruption.

“What we are witnessing is pure intimidation. All of this is politically motivated,” says opposition governor James Orengo, who is also a prominent lawyer representing Yatani. Former Defence minister and member of the main opposition Azimio coalition, Eugene Wamalwa, accused the Ruto administration of targeting officials from the Kenyatta government for intimidation and revenge.

Wa Iria denied the charges and was released on KSh10m bail. However, he failed to raise the money and was detained for two days. His lawyer“We shall stand with Wa Iria come rain or shine. You cannot weaponise the war against corruption,” Kalonzo said outside the court, adding that the former governor was targeted due to his political stand against the current administration.
