OTTAWA - The world’s major social media companies are not doing enough to help Canada combat potential foreign meddling in this October’s elections and the government might have to regulate them, the cabinet minister in charge of ensuring a fair vote said on Monday.

Gould expects Facebook Inc, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google to help safeguard the vote by promoting transparency, authenticity, and integrity on their platforms, and said she has been disappointed by the slowness of talks with the companies. Earlier Monday, the Communications Signals Establishment , responsible for foreign signals intelligence and protecting Canadian government electronic information and communication networks, released a report into likely foreign interference in the elections but did not mention any specific threat from Russia.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said last week she was “very concerned” about possible Russian interference in the voting and that there “have probably already been efforts by malign foreign actors to disrupt our democracy”.

Lucrative but fraudulent promotion for Trudeau...

The threat of control should belay its necessity. Social media reps should already be held accountable for questionable material. Freedom of speech makes direct control functionally unconstitutional, but it’s also essential our government has that freedom if dire/necessary.

It's about foreign election meddling, by RUSSIA, & others, not censorship. They're interfering in elections all over the world, we don't want that here too! We've been warned they may try it here, & after what they did in the US, no thanks 🤮🤮🤬🤬🤬🤬

The take away: Canada uses paper ballots! TY for that info.

CHINA can insist on it standards for social media - why on earth can’t others work together - out the interests of the baddies aside - and sort this out!

When you go to a physical polling place to vote, there are posted warnings that prohibit electioneering within a set perimeter around the location. This proposed regulation in Canada, I think, is an attempt to serve that purpose. 🗳️✅⚡️

AND SO IT STARTS. THE PROGRESSIVES WILL COME FOR THE MSM, AND TALK FORUMS. IT WILL BE FUN.

Funny how politicians are now suddenly getting worried about social media. genie bottle uncorked

This should be the norm in all democracies
