Dow Jones economists reportedly expected a 0.4% monthly increase in the CPI. Items with the biggest price increases from March were transportation , shelter , electricity , and"food away from home" . Left- and center-rated sources framed the report more positively than right-rated sources did, but all suggested that the data wasn't enough to force an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.
On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.3%, a slower pace of growth than the 0.4% seen in the two months prior. The consumer price index, a broad measure of how much goods and services cost at the cash register, increased 0.3% from March, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Services reported Wednesday. That was slightly below the Dow Jones estimate for 0.4%.
