Albertsons Companies, one of the largest food and drug retailers in the U.S., is joining IBM’s Food Trust network to pilot blockchain technology to increase transparency for romaine lettuce

Albertsons provides grocery food products as well as pharmaceuticals and day to day household products across the United States northwest with more than a 1000 locations.Albertsons Companies, one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States, is joining IBM’s blockchain-based Food Trust network.

will help bring blockchain-based food traceability to both consumers and industry players. Since a blockchain network is a system of record that can be used to trace and authenticate objects as they move through the supply chain, a digital record of every transaction or interaction can be created for food products.

The entire food industry is subject to recalls for all food products. We started with the idea of getting more involved with recalls, as this would help save money and ensure that consumers wouldn’t be affected by contaminated food, said Livingston. However, we started to see growth in the solution more around decision making in the supply chain.
