The government has reassured Australians that no documents need to be replaced as a result of the hack on the little-known technology company.

Australians’ prescription information was accessed in the hack on MediSecure, the national cybersecurity co-ordinator has confirmed, escalating the stakes in the ransomware case.

Patients did not select one network or the other, instead receiving texts with their prescription from whichever network their doctor was using. The other network, eRX, ultimately owned by Telstra and the Pharmacy Guild, won the government contract for the single national register. The government had systems to prevent fraudulent medical claims, the co-ordinator’s page said, and no documents needed to be replaced.
