Former President Donald Trump speaks following the day's proceedings in his trial Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in Manhattan Criminal Court in New York.
There was a delay on the floor before Republicans decided to pull his comments from the record, per numerous reports. In response to Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman posting to X, “So next time a Republican talks about the sham trial or rigged charges, Dems can move to take their words down. And around and around we go,” McGovern said: “It’s actually the opposite. The point I was making is that saying Trump’s trial is a sham is *in order* on the floor. But simply saying there *is* a trial is against the rules. You can only talk about the trial on the House Floor if you’re using it to defend Donald Trump.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of an alleged effort to keep salacious — and, he says, bogus — stories about his sex life from emerging during his 2016 campaign. On Monday, Trump called the case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg a “scam” and “witch hunt.”
