British Olympics swimming champion David Wilkie has passed away peacefully at the age of 70. The Scot had been battling cancer for some time. Wilkie won gold at the 1976 Montreal Games in the 200m breaststroke, plus two other Olympic silver medal and a whopping three world titles. His family released a statement confirming his sad death.
Two years later in Munich, Wilkie won Olympic silver before ascending to World Championship gold in 1973. His career went from strength to strength thereafter, adding three more Commonwealth medals, including two golds, to his cabinet in 1974. The champion swimmer was a household name by 1975, but it was in 1976 that he reached the apex of his glittering career.
