Coles customers will only be able to purchase two cartons of eggs at any one time, the supermarket giant has announced. The move is in response to a supply shortage caused by the recent outbreak of the bird flu strain H7N3. The highly pathogenic H7N3 strain of bird flu has been detected on five egg farms in Victoria’s southwest with more than half a million chickens euthanised in an effort to stop the spread of the disease.
Avian flu hits egg supplies across the country. The two egg carton limit is across its stores nationally, except for those outlets in Western Australia. Coles has confirmed the restrictions will only be temporary. “We are working closely with all of our suppliers to ensure eggs remain available for our customers, and we are providing support to the industry in responding to the avian flu cases in Victoria,” a Coles spokesman said.
