A new report has for the first time found traces of highly potent opioids known as nitazenes in drugs consumed in Africa’s retail drug market.

“The GI-TOC believes that these results are the first indication that nitazenes have penetrated retail drug markets in Africa,” the report said.with between 5.2% and 13.5% using cannabis, the most widely used illicit substance on the continent, according to the World Health Organization. Nitazenes have been detected repeatedly in substances sold to young people in the region such that users are most likely ingesting them"without knowing the risks they face,” Wednesday's report said.
