Cody Simpson has fallen short of his Olympic dream, failing to qualify for the Paris Games at the swim trials in Brisbane. Needing to finish top two in the 100m butterfly to book his ticket, Simpson came fifth in a time of 51.79 seconds. Matt Temple won in a time of 51.15 to just seal his spot under the qualification time of 51.17. Ben Armbruster finished second in 51.23, but has already booked his spot in the team so can serve as back-up for Temple in the relay teams.
“It has been absolutely unbelievable. I gave everything I had this week and sometimes that’s all you can do.” Simpson went on to say he was satisfied with his journey. “I can remember in 2022 everyone was like ‘what are you doing? This is absolutely impossible.’ I said ‘well, I just want to see what I can get out of myself’,” he continued. “I think I have been able to satisfy a part of myself that was certainly a fire burning very much inside me.
