European Commission

There now appears to be a four-way race to replace Michael McGrath as Finance Minister

Fianna Fáil’s Michael McGrath is expected to be announced as Ireland’s next European Commissioner at Tuesday morning's Cabinet meeting.

The Irish Mirror also understands that it may be several days before there is a mini Cabinet reshuffle. It is expected that Minister McGrath will be formally confirmed as Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness’ successor this afternoon. The timeline for his expected departure was unclear on Monday. He will take up his new role in October or November. It is currently expected that the Budget will be held in and around Tuesday, October 8, but that it may be held earlier.

Several people also suggested that whoever will take over the Finance Minister position will want an opportunity to make their mark before the election.
