The government needs to focus on in-demand upskilling if it really wants to affect the youth job market in today's day and age.

Despite billions spent on youth upskilling drives across the country by the government, a significant portion of young people are still excluded from working and upskilling.

According to the DG Murray Trust , a local philanthropic organisation focused on nurturing young black talent, a third of young South Africans are simply locked out of these public upskilling drives. “Investing in demand-led skilling must be high on the new government’s agenda for the next five years,” adds Hannah.

“Similarly, occupations in repairs, maintenance and installations are also in high demand, and there is an increasing need for skilled workers to provide social services in communities,” says Hannah.
