'This is such a characterful and attractive building with a proud history'

As the march of the glass fingers continues on either side of the River Irwell it has surivived. Huge tower blocks may have spring up all around it but a Victorian school dodged the bulldozer.

The Salford Chronicle reporting on the school's opening noted: "The windows which are large and numerous are so arranged that all above the lower storey can be easily cleaned from the inside, a necessary precaution in our smoky atmosphere." He added: “Blackfriars Road is known for having some well-appointed and sought-after apartments that have been developed within conversions of historic buildings such as the former Textiles Institute.
