It urges the health ministry to plug all loopholes in current legislation and anticipate how the tobacco industry will evolve in the future.

CAP says the new Tobacco Control Act must expand the definition of cigarettes beyond the present conventional description.

“The way forward for the industry is to adopt brand and product extensions so that their products will not be within the definition of most countries’ tobacco control laws or the FCTC,” it said in a statement. The government has already introduced a nationwide ban on smoking in public places including restaurants, which came into effect on Jan 1.

“Misleading descriptors such as ‘light’, ‘mild’, ‘low tar’, ‘premium’, and ‘full-flavour’ are banned on the packages.
