The first presidential debate of the 2024 election season is here and it's slated to be an intense meeting between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump — two men who are sharing the debate stage again for the first time in nearly four years.
Thursday's debate will feature rules, agreed to by the candidates, with the goal of avoiding insults and interruptions. Microphones will be muted when it's not a candidate's turn to speak, and there will be no live audience in the room. Scripps News continues special coverage of debate preparations until the main event begins at 9 p.m. ET, and then will air CNN's simulcast of the debate live on-air and online.
But as the presumptive Democratic and Republican presidential nominees prepare to take the stage Thursday night, both have a history of making false, misleading, or simply exaggerated statements. Check back in here at 9 p.m. ET for live updates as we delve into some of the claims made by both candidates and fact-check their validity.
