Hurricane Beryl weakened to a Category 2 storm on Thursday evening, moving over open water toward an expected Friday landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.A hurricane warning was in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico south of Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal and for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico north of Cancun to Campeche.Storm surge was forecast at 3 to 5 feet over ground level for coastal areas within the hurricane warning region.
"Hurricane-force winds, dangerous storm surge, and heavy rainfall are expected over portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize beginning tonight as Beryl approaches that area as a hurricane," the National Hurricane Center said in a statement."Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for portions of that area."
