The Glegg Arms, on Chester Road in Heswall, had its last day in business yesterday, after operating as a pub since the 1840s. The pub, which was part of Whitbread's Beefeater chain, closed on Thursday, July 4, as Whitbread shut a number of sites across the country.
Reacting to the news of the closure, many ECHO readers shared their memories of the Glegg Arms. One reader said: "Oh no that’s such a shame, we used to visit with our daughter here the play area was great." On Facebook someone else added: "What a terrible shame." Someone else replied: "I remember it from the 80's. It had a bridge and wishing well you threw coins into. Shame but not visited for years." And another person said: "Loved this place in the early 90s, best food, had my 18th birthday meal in the Glegg, lovely memories."
Dominic Paul, Whitbread CEO, said: "When I joined Whitbread as CEO in January 2023, it was clear to me that we had a high performing hotels business, with a strong platform for growth in both the UK and Germany. Our strategy of continuing to invest in our brand, teams, and estate for the benefit of our guests and customers has secured a market-leading position for Premier Inn in the UK and is also delivering strong business performance.
