The FCC vows that 5G networks will be a private sector project

Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission , center, speaks during an event on developing 5G Infrastructure with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Friday, April 12, 2019. Trump said the U.S. will cut regulations and free up spectrum for 5G technology amid tight competition with China and other nations to develop the next generation of telecommunications infrastructure.

At that event, Trump declared:"In the United States, our approach is private sector driven and private sector led." Then there is Brad Parscale, the manager of Trump's 2020 campaign, who has promoted the idea of a government-run 5G network, prompting the administration toaffirming that the policy is to let the private sector take the lead in building and running the networks.

That plan includes auctions to sell off chunks of the airwaves that wireless carriers will use to power their networks. The commission wrapped up one such spectrum auction in January, and another is currently underway. A third auction is scheduled to begin in December.
