The number of cattle allowed onboard live export ships is about to be reduced. Industry says the new rule makes no sense and will cause financial pain.

Even under the old regulations, Australia provided more space per animal than Ireland and the rest of the EU, and the same as New Zealand and the United States.According to the ASEL report, the biggest changes in stocking density relate to lighter cattle — 200 to 350 kilograms — which affects the feeder cattle trade more than the slaughter trade.

When asked if exporters can afford the change, Mr Harvey-Sutton said exporters already operated on tight margins, so the extra cost"will likely be passed back through the supply chain". At 300kg, the space allowance moves from 1.110 square metres per head to 1.165 square metres, an increase of roughly 5 per cent.

ABC Rural has not been able to get anyone to take a guess, but Northern Territory livestock agent Paul McCormick believed the live export price will be affected.

The map attached shows how Australia ranks compared to other countries. The darkest yellow = the best. We're not quite there.

The fewer the better ..none would be optimal.

JimmiJai Why repeat bullshit MattBrannRURAL? This statement is not true, a lie, objectively false, no matter how many times the live exporters say it: “Australia already had the highest standards of animal welfare in the world & amongst the lowest stocking densities.” Journo ethics much?
