National Assembly passed a resolution for the closing of the embassy eight months ago.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says Cabinet is yet to deliberate and make a final decision on the closure of the Israeli Embassy.

This is despite the National Assembly passing a resolution for the closing of the embassy eight months ago. The majority of MPs accepted the argument that this was for the protection of human rights amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. However, the resolution has not yet been implemented. Lamaola’s spokesperson Chrispin Phiri, “The status of the National Assembly resolution to shut down the Israeli Embassy, Minister Lamola has provided an update that Cabinet is yet to process as the resolution, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperations will act on the instructions of the Cabinet.”

A political analyst says it’s still likely to happen, despite the country having a Government of National Unity . Some of the political parties that have formed the GNU voted against the closing down of the Israeli embassy. Political Analyst, Sandile Swana, “The campaign to stop the genocide in Palestine by the Israeli government led by South Africa has been successful internationally to the point that by and large it is only the US that is preventing the two-state solution from being implemented and ending the hostilities, specifically in the conflict between Palestinians and the State of Israel.
