Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee to monitor developments around arrest of 95 Libyan nationals

95 Libyan nationals who were arrested on a farm outside White River make their first court appearance, July 29, 2024.Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee says it will continue to monitor developments around the arrest of 95 Libyan nationals, who were in the country allegedly for military training.

The discovery of the alleged illegal military training camp near White River took the country by surprise. The area was raided by police and Home Affairs officials last week. A Defense and Security Analyst says it is strange that government was unaware of the training that took place. “I think there are a few questions that need to be asked. How did they enter South Africa for so-called security training at a camp that is registered with PSIRA for foreign nationals that shouldn’t be doing South Africa security training as such. It now looks to be military training at a facility or training schools that is only registered at a very low level of security training and not for more specialized security training.
