August is Black Business Month, a time to acknowledge and appreciate Black-owned businesses and what they represent in the effort for diversity and equality.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Black entrepreneurs play a valuable role in the nation’s economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent estimates, the United States has more than 161,000 Black-owned businesses, bringing in over $183 billion annually.

That comes out to about 10% of all American businesses. Nearly 40 percent of those businesses are in industries like health care, social work, repair and maintenance, beauty salons, and restaurants.The City of Montgomery is kicking off the month with a special event this weekend at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, the Alabama Collective and Access Montgomery are kicking off Black Business Month with a Garden Party. The proceeds go to the MGM S.E.E.D. Grant. MGM S.E.E.D. is a grassroots initiative designed to empower and uplift small and minority-owned businesses by providing financial assistance along with essential resources such as mentorship, networking opportunities, and business development training to ensure the long-term success of its beneficiaries.
