Chief Clinical Oncologist, Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority/Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Abayomi Durosinmi-Etti, discusses colorectal cancer, also called colon or bowel cancer, withColon cancer refers to cancers occurring in the large intestine of the digestive tract which includes any part of the ascending, transverse and descending colon, the caecum and the rectum near the anus. They are otherwise referred to as colorectal cancers.
The screening should include stool examination for faecal occult blood test and colonoscopy by examining doctor. People should take proper diet, engage in regular exercise and reduce alcohol consumption. Weight loss could help prevent or reduce the chances of having colon cancer. One should eat lots of vegetables, exercise, encourage weight loss, reduce alcohol and cigarette intake, reduce intake of junks, reduce consumption of smoked red meat, and regular screening.
Prevention is therefore cheaper and better than a cure and the best way of coping which I will advise is for Nigerians to prevent cancer or ensure early diagnosis and full treatment.
