The U.S. decision to deny Huawei access to U.S. technology could bite into its booming consumer-device business

Huawei, which last year surpassed Apple as the world’s No. 2 supplier of smartphones, relies on Google’s Android operating system to run its devices. Photo: aly song/Reuters By Dan Strumpf and Yoko Kubota Updated May 20, 2019 7:03 a.m. ET Google is halting some services for smartphones made by Huawei Technologies Co., according to people familiar with the matter, in a sign that the U.S. decision to deny the Chinese tech giant access to U.S.

Last week the U.S. Commerce Department said it was adding Huawei to its “Entity List” on national-security grounds, requiring companies that export U.S. technology to the Chinese company to apply for a license. The department has indicated applications are likely to be denied, which would cut off Huawei from a range of crucial American suppliers.

A Huawei spokesman said the company will continue providing security updates and after-sales services to existing Huawei smartphone and tablets, “covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.” A Google spokesman said the company is “complying with the order and reviewing the implications.” The spokesman added that many Android functions will continue running as normal, including access to the Google Play app-store service and security protections from Google Play Protect. Reuters first reported the halt by Google.

About time - I was in China last year and could not use google(including maps) because they're a BANNED by the communist govt. I had to pay foe a VPN to bypass the 'WALL'.

Remember they kicked out google from CHINA in 2010.

So under the Trump treatment, Huawei sales went up 50 % in one quarter and it overtook Apple? I think this blockade will cause them to use only Chinese chips and America's trade deficit will get worse. Losing!

This reaction has a bad effect on Huawei and who have bought it

Go away China. We don’t want your eyes on us.

Too bad for the commies.

HUAWEI MIGHT BE ABLE TO BUY THEM ELSEWHERE. LIKE THIRD PARTY

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨US technology stocks will definitely fall today! The rare earths needed for semiconductors will soon be restricted from exporting, which is brought by Trump.

So good!

Stolen tech....good ban them. China steals everything.
