Investors spend most of their time accessing Vanguard through computers, but the firm's seen 'surprising growth' in mobile, said one company economist.

But mobile's seeing"surprising growth," Xu said, with a nearly 20% annual increase in time spent on mobile over the study's three years.Vanguard's CEO just revealed it's in the early stages of building a new tech platform for wealth advisors as it goes head-to-head with BlackRock's Aladdin

"That was an a-ha moment for us, which is that it's relatively hard to get older people to start using mobile technology, but it doesn't mean that when we design the technology, we should discount them," Xu said."Once they start to use the technology, they spend just as much time as young people using these technologies."
