Investing in a traditional S&P 500 index fund inevitably means buying exposure to companies that may have high carbon emissions or strong ties to areas like weapons or tobacco.

In the meantime, there are a range of equity and bond index funds that investors may want to consider if they want to make ESG a priority. That is because over time, the Vanguard Group founder's theory goes, that strategy can potentially mimic the market's returns without the high costs that come with other funds. Bogle was considered the titan of low-cost investing.

That is because investing in an S&P 500 index fund, for example, includes companies tied to high carbon emissions, tobacco or firearms.
