Six children who died reportedly ate suspected poisoned snacks from a local tuck shop.

The National Consumer Commission says it is dismayed that some tuck shops in Naledi, Soweto, are still selling food that is not fit for human consumption.

The commission embarked on compliance inspections following the deaths of the children who reportedly ate suspected poisoned snacks from a local tuck shop. The NCC’s Head of Complaints and Investigations, Prudence Moilwa, says the compliance checks revealed alarming practices among local businesses. “It is quite disheartening to find that even in light of the incidents that have happened in Naledi, the shops in Naledi are still non-compliant. We found a wide variety of issues related to food that still visibly is not good for human consumption. We also found a widespread sale of expired foodstuff that was still on the shelves even yesterday and the day before. Also, food that is visibly not good for human consumption including baby products or baby food.
