READ MORE: Friendship, hardship and poverty: Unseen photos of children playing in the slums of ManchesterThe photos, taken on Tuesday, July 14, 1981, are part of HMV's archive collection. Earlier in the week, adverts for the big opening ran in the Manchester Evening News, outlining the special guests and the day's events.
Other star guests booked to sign copies of their new records on the day were Barbara Dixon and the heavy metal band Saxon. Perhaps the biggest guest on the day was Nipper, the Jack Russell terrier who is also part of HMV's iconic logo. Not the original Nipper photographed listening to the gramophone: he died in 1895.Not only do the photographs show the crowds and inside the new Arndale HMV store, but some of the images remind us of the shops we used to love on Market Street.
