Eastern Cape government has activated its disaster management teams to provide support to communities affected by heavy rainfalls in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
This comes as hundreds of families across the metro have been displaced, and one person died as a result of the floods that hit the metro on Monday night.Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Zolile Williams has blamed the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality for a poor drainage system.
The province has been subjected to heavy rains for the past two days, which have caused flooding and destruction in some parts of the municipality. “In formalised townships, there are large pools of water showing that the stormwater drainage systems have not been properly maintained and this is a normal function of the municipality. When you don’t manage refuse it ends up in your stormwater drainage systems and then blocks them,” explains Williams.
