The second phase of government's operation to bring to the surface illegal miners is underway.

Second phase of government’s operation to retrieve illegal miners from underground in Stilfontein.North West Community Safety MEC Wessels Morweng says this kind of retrieval operation of illegal miners at Stilfontein is the first of its kind to be carried out.who are underground at a mine is underway.

Members of the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force are involved in the operation. Community representatives say there are over 4 000 illegal miners underground but government has disputed the figure.He says, “On an operation of this nature it will be for the very first time that they will be dealing with this operation of this nature given the depth of the mine. ”

“They’ve dealt with operations of this nature before but they have indicated to us that the depth of that mine is 3km deep, so they indicated to us that it’s a different animal altogether, but what has comforted us as government authority is it is the fact that they indicated to us that they can be able to carry out a mission of this nature,” Morweng adds.
