OTTAWA – The dream of establishing an Inuit-led university took a step closer to reality with a $50 million investment from the Mastercard Foundation. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), the national representative organization for Inuit in Canada, will use this funding to build capacities and advance academic plans. The university aims to promote language retention, economic opportunities, and cultural revitalization.
ITK requires an additional $110 million to open a main campus and initial degree programs by 2030. The organization plans to request $50 million from the federal government in its next budget. ITK President Natan Obed emphasized the university's role in enhancing educational access for Inuit and aligning with their societal and cultural values
