The Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada's national representative organization for Inuit people, is one step closer to realizing its dream of establishing an Inuit-led university with a $50 million investment from the Mastercard Foundation. The organization plans to build key capacities and develop academic programs, aiming to promote language retention, cultural revitalization, and economic opportunities.
The university, named Inuit Nunangat University, will be the first of its kind, grounded in Inuit society and aiming to open its doors in 2030. President Natan Obed of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami said the university will remove barriers to post-secondary education and equip Inuit communities with the skills they need. The organization seeks an additional $110 million in funding to fully realize its vision
