The Open will be played at Royal Portrush in 2025 and Rory McIlroy is already relishing the prospect of playing another major in his home country

Rory McIlroy insists next year's Open at Royal Portrush is a real focus - admitting he has "unfinished business" in his homeland after missing the cut there in 2019.

He endured an emotional 24 hours when the Open was in the country of his birth five years ago. Irishman Shane Lowry claimed victory, but McIlroy failed to make it past the second round as a disastrous opening 18 holes saw him miss out. He told Sky Sports: "I love that we’re playing the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in May, which is typically when we played the Wells Fargo. It’s when I know the golf course the best and sort of I know that it’s going to play, you know, the characteristics.

McIlroy had the crowd dreaming of a miraculous comeback last time at Royal Portrush. Despite his horrendous opening round he returned on Friday as a man on a mission and carded a six under par round, leaving him two over across the tournament, but missed the cut by a single shot.
